period three
As America entered the 1930's, it was going into an economic depression. In 1929, the stock market crashed, causing the Gross Domestic Product (GPD) to decrease per capita. With Herbert Hoover taking office shortly before the recession, he was blamed for many of the problems. After 1933, America was recovering under the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt. The Dust Bowl hit during the 1930's, due to drought in the American prairies. This time period was known as the dirty thirties. In the 1940's America faced the problem of war once again. After being attacked in Pearl Harbor, American president Franklin Roosevelt declared war. In the 1950's, civil rights became an issue, and thus started the Civil Rights Movement.

Herbert Hoover
|
This political cartoon to the right displays Herbert Hoover speaking with a farmer. Placed behind president Hoover is a scarecrow labeled "Farm Relief." The scarecrow holds a rifle pointed towards a flock of birds, which are labeled "Hard Times." This image is to show how farm relief is working. Hoover is explaining how it's not the best thing, but it will work. The farmer is smiling to depict how farmers reacted to the farm relief.
After the Agricultural Adjustment Act(AAA) was passed, it forced farmers to quit producing their goods. As America went into depression, American stores were being overstocked with goods from farmers. As a result, stores lost money in buying produce with no buyers. Farmers were paid by the government to stop or slow their production of their product. Soon after the AAA was in progress, Congress reviewed it. Congress believed that the Agricultural Adjustment Act was unconstitutional. They saw that it was unconstitutional because no organization can tell a producer to end production. As a result, the AAA was shut down due to being unconstitutional. After the AAA was shut down, president Herbert Hoover passed the Farm Relief Bill, which gave farmers a bit of money that they can live under while they recovered from the actions of the Agricultural Adjustment Act. This bill helped a little, as others saw it unfair for farmers to get pay checks for not working. |
Franklin Delano Roosevelt

This photo was taken at the Yalta Conference in February, 1945. (Left to Right) Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, and Joseph Stalin are seated for a photography session after one of the meetings. The Big Three met at the Livadia Palace near Yalta, USSR. These leaders of Great Britain(Churchill), United States(Roosevelt), and Soviet Union(Stalin) were allies in the Second World War, forming the Allied Powers, or Allied Nations.
At the conference, the three leaders met to discuss what would happen as a result of the war. They first decided that the League of Nations was flawed and that it should not continue. Instead of getting rid of the League of Nations completely, they decided to construct another group. This time, it was the United Nations. The purpose was still to keep peace between the countries to avoid furture wars. Another product of the Yalta Conference was that they decided to split Germany up into four parts and each Allied country would rebuild Germany themselves. Great Britain, Soviet Union, France, and America received equal parts of Germany they were responsible for rebuilding, as well as parts of Berlin. With the Soviet Union being communist, America was tenuous about letting the Soviet Union have a helping hand in rebuilding Germany. There was a self determination in the rebuilding of Eastern Europe. America wanted to spread democracy and capitalism, while Soviets wanted to spread communism. This conference between the Big Three set a tone for what would become known as the Cold War. |
Harry S. Truman
|
The photo on the left shows the announcement from president Harry S. Truman about the surrender of Japan. Japan was the last country of the Axis Powers to surrender to the Allied Nations. Japan forced America into the Second World War by the attack on Pearl Harbor. Shortly after, America declared war on Japan and its allies.
After Roosevelt lead the Allies to victory in Europe, he passed, giving the office to Harry Truman. Truman only had one remaining country to face, while he had Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union on his side. Truman was given the opportunity to end the Second Great War. During the war, the Manhattan Project was taking place in America. Every country was racing to be the first country to produce a nuclear weapon. America had many military and government officials on the case to win this race. After many tests and constructions, America had finally produced the world's first nuclear bomb. This opened up a chance for Truman to force Japan to surrender. On August 6th, Truman sends the first plane to carry an atomic bomb across the Pacific to Japan. The first bomb was dropped over Hiroshima, which completely wiped out the city. After a few days, there was no word from Japan, so we loaded another bomb and sent it to be dropped on Nagasaki. Shortly after, Japan finally surrendered to the Allies, ending World War Two. |
Dwight D. Eisenhower
|
The video is the orders given by Dwight D. Eisenhower on the D-Day Invasion. Eisenhower was one of the commanding officers in the invasion. He knew it wouldn't be an easy battle, so he prepared his men for the best. Eisenhower wanted his troops to know what they were fighting for, and what they were up against.
Operation Overlord was the most strategical plan in military history, causing a hard-fought battle. America faked an attack using Hollywood set peices to fool German spy planes. They placed the "dummy" army away from the original attack zone, to attempt to get the enemies out of Normandy. American troops stormed the beach of Normandy, France, as an attempt to regain control. Many troops were killed the instant they hit the sand, others had to run for cover. They had to push back a front of strong German soldiers. Eventually the Allies were able to force a retreat from the Axis Powers. D-Day became well known and is considered a very important battle of World War Two. Due to Eisenhower and his strategic moves, he was able to guide America and her allies to victory in Europe. |
